How to play civilization 5 multiplayer?

I have a mac and just bought Civilization 5. I went to play multiplayer and there are no game sessions...ever. I have tried to create sessions to but no one ever joins, Im thinking i need to create some sort of online account for some website? And yes I have a steam account and my game is synced with it.
