My minecraft wont work please help me!?

i want to play multiplayer but when i type in a random server number it wont work. it just connection timed out after a long time or it almost immediatly says connection refused: connect. please tell me whats wrong and how to fix it. i am very new to minecraft multiplayer and i dont have hamachi yet.
