Why is my world of warcraft world literally empty?

hmmm... seems like you found the Twilight Zone of realms >.< that is very odd indeed have you traveled to Stormwind? That's where everyone hangs out when they are not questing around. As for transferring to another server... Unfortunately you cannot do that unless your willing to pay an extra 25 bucks per character to transfer to a different realm.
